What happened: Hideki Matsui stepped into his new role Friday during his formal introduction at the helm of Nippon Professional Baseball's Yomiuri Giants. The former New York Yankees outfielder brings two MLB All-Star selections to the Tokyo dugout.

Why it matters: Matsui cemented his postseason legacy in 2009, launching a go-ahead home run off Pedro Martinez in Game 2 on his way to World Series MVP honors. His hiring places one of Japan's most decorated MLB alumni in charge of the league's flagship club.

What to watch: Matsui now turns to finalizing his coaching staff and offseason roster plans ahead of spring camp.
