What happened: Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty made "quick work" of the Seattle Mariners in the first inning on Sunday, retiring the side in order on 13 pitches. Flaherty struck out Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor to set an early tone in the series finale at Comerica Park.

Why it matters: The dominant opening frame is a vital sign for Flaherty, who is looking to stabilize his 2026 campaign after a 1-7 start. Facing the AL West-leading Mariners, his ability to generate early swing-and-miss results provides a much-needed boost to a Tigers rotation coming off a shutout loss.

What to watch: Flaherty will look to maintain his command through the middle innings as Detroit attempts to avoid a series sweep.
