NBA Finals: Knicks vs. Spurs, like 1999. Via @AdamSchefter on X

What happened: Adam Schefter framed the NBA Finals matchup as New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs, echoing the 1999 Finals. The post comes after prior coverage that the Knicks reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.

Why it matters: The matchup carries immediate historical weight because 1999 was also Knicks-Spurs on the league’s biggest stage. It turns the 2026 Finals into both a championship series and a direct callback to the last time New York played for the title.

By the numbers: 1999 NBA Finals: San Antonio Spurs defeated New York Knicks, 4-1. 2026 note: Knicks' Finals berth is their first since that 1999 series.

What to watch: Watch for the NBA Finals schedule, Game 1 availability reports and how both teams frame the 1999 rematch angle.
