What happened: Robert Lewandowski will wear the No. 9 shirt at the Chicago Fire, with current MLS Golden Boot leader Hugo Cuypers giving up the number and moving to a new one. Cuypers said the switch was an easy call, calling Lewandowski one of the greatest No. 9s ever and saying it wouldn't look right for him to play in any other number.

Why it matters: The gesture underscores the stature Lewandowski brings to a Chicago Fire side that framed his arrival as a statement of trophy ambition. Ceding the No. 9 — a shirt loaded with meaning for a striker — signals a clear hierarchy up front and how the club intends to build around its marquee signing.

What to watch: Watch how Chicago integrates both forwards, and which number Cuypers ultimately takes, as Lewandowski works toward his competitive debut.
