Wire Report IntelligenceUpdated 1h1 min read

What happened: Miles Smith resigned as Desert Ridge head coach Oct. 19, with father Lovie Smith also leaving his volunteer assistant role. The move followed the Oct. 5 dismissal of senior quarterback Gunner Brewer after a changed play in an Oct. 2 14-12 win over Vail Cienega.

Why it matters: Desert Ridge went 0-10 last season before Miles Smith took over around December 2025. The program lost 49-7 to Red Mountain on Oct. 9 and 50-0 to Corona del Sol on Oct. 15 after 12 players left in support of Brewer.

By the numbers: Desert Ridge: 0-10 last season; 14-12 win Oct. 2; 56-20 loss Sept. 25; 49-7 loss Oct. 9; 50-0 loss Oct. 15. Brewer: 6 games, over 1,000 passing yards. Suspended group: 12 total, 5 seniors and 7 underclassmen.

What to watch: Administrators are weighing reinstatement for at least some suspended players. No official resignation letter or confirmed returns had emerged as of the evening of Oct. 19.
