What happened: Maryland and Mike Locksley mutually agreed to part ways Wednesday, ending his eight-year run as head coach. Locksley first joined the Terps as running backs coach in 1997 and returned as head coach in 2019.

Why it matters: The move followed a 2-5 start with an 0-4 conference mark after back-to-back 4-8 seasons. It closed a tenure that included an unprecedented run of three straight bowl wins from 2021 to 2023.

By the numbers: Maryland went 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten to open 2026 after consecutive 4-8 finishes with 1-8 conference marks. The Terps beat Auburn 31-13 in the 2023 Music City Bowl to cap the third straight bowl win.

What to watch: Maryland now turns to a coaching search and holding the current roster through the transition.
