What happened: Verstappen disclosed that he is using medication throughout the United States Grand Prix weekend to manage back discomfort aggravated by the Austin track surface. He stated that the bumps approaching Turn 1 and Turn 19 are severe enough that he has to lift himself out of the seat before reaching both corners.

Why it matters: Lifting out of the seat entering heavy braking zones complicates car control over a full Grand Prix distance at Circuit of the Americas. Navigating the opening-lap climb into Turn 1 from the second row adds immediate physical demand for the same Max Verstappen who was reprimanded after a Portimao GT3 practice clash.

By the numbers: United States Grand Prix starting grid top five: P1 Charles Leclerc, P2 Kimi Antonelli, P3 George Russell, P4 Max Verstappen, P5 Lando Norris.

What to watch: The United States Grand Prix main race at Circuit of the Americas is next on the weekend schedule.
