What happened: Lionel Messi is now the all-time leader in assists in World Cup history. He reached nine career assists at the tournament, moving one clear of Diego Maradona's eight. The milestone was confirmed officially.

Why it matters: The mark adds to a growing list of records Messi has claimed at this World Cup, where he already became the tournament's all-time top scorer. Passing Maradona, an icon of Argentine football, carries particular weight for a player long measured against his predecessor. It cements Messi's standing as the most prolific creator the competition has seen.

What to watch: Watch whether Messi extends the record further as Argentina's campaign continues.
