What happened: PSG, Arsenal and Real Madrid supply the largest club contingents. Lionel Messi is back after missing the past two editions.

Why it matters: The selections establish the voting pool for football's top individual men's honor. Multiple candidates from the same clubs could divide support across the field.

By the numbers: PSG accounts for 10 nominees, one-third of the field. Messi holds the men's record with eight Ballon d'Or wins.

What to watch: The winner will be announced Oct. 26 at the London Palladium.
