What happened: Nathan MacKinnon and Roope Hintz dropped their gloves and traded punches during a heated NHL matchup. Following the altercation, MacKinnon exited to the locker room for medical attention to treat an open facial cut.

Why it matters: Top-line centers rarely engage in fighting Majors given the risk of hand injuries or extended absences early in the 2026-27 regular season. MacKinnon's willingness to scrap has already sparked debate over the risk of fighting for a franchise cornerstone.

What to watch: Monitor postgame updates to confirm whether MacKinnon required stitches or faces any lingering effects from the cut beyond the initial locker room repair.
