What happened: The NFL Players Association is again pressing for natural grass to be installed across all 30 NFL stadiums. The renewed push lands as the 2026 World Cup opens, with 11 NFL venues set to host dozens of soccer matches on newly laid natural grass fields prepared to meet FIFA's surface standards.

Why it matters: Surface type is a long-running player-safety flashpoint, with the union arguing that natural grass reduces the lower-body injuries players associate with artificial turf. The World Cup buildout undercuts the argument that grass cannot be installed and maintained in every NFL stadium, since several turf venues are being converted specifically for the tournament.

What to watch: Watch whether the temporary World Cup grass conversions become a reference point the union leans on in future safety and labor discussions, and how owners in turf stadiums respond.
