What happened: Right-hander Nick Pivetta is now a free agent, per Bob Nightengale. The Padres declined the $14 million option on his contract, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Why it matters: Pivetta joins the open market after the World Series ended, leaving San Diego with a hole in its rotation. Acee noted the Padres could still sign him to a new deal.

What to watch: Watch whether San Diego pursues a new contract with Pivetta or he signs elsewhere once free agency opens.
