What happened: San Diego closed its 2026 postseason run and now sorts its 2027 roster construction. The pitching staff carries the largest share of open winter questions.

Why it matters: Early October exits shorten contention windows for veteran rosters. How San Diego balances retained innings against payroll flexibility will define its standing entering 2027.

What to watch: Free agency and arbitration deadlines set the order of operations. Rotation clarity comes before position-player moves.
