What happened: The San Diego Padres selected left-handed pitcher Luis Gutierrez to their major league roster. The move secures the southpaw a spot on the 40-man roster as the club begins structuring its pitching staff for next season.

Why it matters: The roster move arrived alongside San Diego's decision to tender a qualifying offer to Adrian Morejon. Solidifying internal pitching depth remains an immediate priority for the front office as it navigates rotation changes and bullpen needs ahead of 2027.

What to watch: San Diego will finalize its 40-man roster ahead of upcoming winter roster deadlines. Gutierrez will vie for a relief or depth role when camp opens in the spring.
