We've got the Padres and Dodgers coming your way tonight on our #MLBNShowcase presented by @goodyear! 🔥 https://t.co/vMN

What happened: The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers meet Thursday night in a nationally televised NL West matchup. The Dodgers lead the current series 2-1 as the two rivals square off again. Los Angeles is listed as a heavy home favorite for the scheduled game.

Why it matters: The Dodgers (56-31) own one of the best records in baseball and continue to press their NL West advantage, while the Padres (43-42) arrive scuffling near .500. With San Diego dropping its last five, another divisional result carries weight in a race Los Angeles has controlled for much of the season.

By the numbers: Los Angeles enters at 56-31, scoring 5.3 runs per game and allowing 3.5; San Diego sits 43-42, scoring 3.9 and allowing 4.3 while losers of five straight. Recent head-to-head has swung hard both ways: the Padres routed the Dodgers 7-1 on June 26 before Los Angeles answered 15-3 on June 27 and 4-2 on June 28.

What to watch: Watch the pitching matchups and whether San Diego can snap its five-game skid against a first-place Dodgers club that has dominated recent meetings.
