Passan: Royals likely to retain Wacha, Lugo at deadline

Expiring deals remain Kansas City's clearest trade path

What happened: Mark Feinsand reported that Kansas City is open to moving John Schreiber, Lane Thomas and Starling Marte. Daniel Lynch IV and Alex Lange are expected to stay because their club control extends beyond 2026.

Why it matters: The Royals believe a core of Bobby Witt Jr., Jac Caglianone, Maikel Garcia, Carter Jensen and Vinnie Pasquantino can contend in 2027. Keeping controllable pitching supports that timeline but narrows the prospect return available this summer.

What to watch: Any offer strong enough to change J.J. Picollo's stance on controllable players is the key deadline variable.
