What happened: New England downgraded rookie cornerback Channing Canada to out for Sunday's game at Buffalo after listing him questionable on the final injury report. Canada had been limited for two straight practices with a hamstring issue and had played in all three games, mostly on special teams, before recording his first career tackle last week.

Why it matters: The move leaves the Patriots thinner for an AFC East matchup at Highmark Stadium with Christian Gonzalez already ruled out alongside Christian Barmore. New England enters Week 4 at 1-2 against a 3-0 Bills team, so more snaps could fall to practice-squad elevations Kindle Vildor and Mike Brown.

By the numbers: Canada has handled 42.8 percent of New England's special-teams workload through three appearances. The Patriots now have three players ruled out for Sunday, while Reggie Gilliam, Eli Raridon, Morgan Moses, Dre'Mont Jones, Christian Elliss and Craig Woodson remained questionable at last update.

What to watch: Final inactives will show whether New England needs more last-minute help before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Buffalo opens Week 4 unbeaten, putting extra focus on how the Patriots patch together the secondary.
