What happened: "It's just one game ... we've got to slow the roll when a quarterback comes off the bench," CBS analyst Pete Prisco said on the postgame broadcast after watching J.J. McCarthy play against the Houston Texans.

Why it matters: A relief appearance gives opposing defenses limited preparation compared to a full week of game-planning for a designated starter. Sustained production across multiple outings remains the standard before projecting a lasting shift on the depth chart.

What to watch: Upcoming practice reps and weekly lineup designations will determine whether McCarthy receives an extended look.
