What happened: Coach Klint Kubiak announced Wednesday that Cousins will open the season at quarterback. Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick, will begin as the backup.

Why it matters: The decision keeps Las Vegas with an experienced starter while Mendoza continues his transition to the NFL. Cousins had a strong camp and preseason after entering camp atop the depth chart.

By the numbers: Cousins is 38 and entering his 15th NFL season; Mendoza was the No.

What to watch: Cousins is set to lead the Raiders against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. Mendoza's role behind him will be monitored as the season begins.
