What happened: Real Madrid have officially appointed José Mourinho as head coach, marking his return to the Santiago Bernabéu 13 years after his first stint. The club triggered a €15 million release clause to secure Mourinho from Benfica, following his unbeaten season in Portugal.

Why it matters: The appointment comes after Mourinho Agrees to Return as Real Madrid Manager earlier this week, signaling President Florentino Pérez's intent to stabilize the club after a trophyless 2025–26 campaign. Mourinho replaces Álvaro Arbeloa and is tasked with restoring Madrid's dominance in La Liga and Europe.

What to watch: Mourinho will formally take charge on July 13, 2026, to begin pre-season preparations.
