What happened: The Boston Red Sox hired Shelley Duncan to their major-league coaching staff, per Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam. Duncan joins the staff under Chad Tracy after spending the past four seasons managing in the New York Yankees minor-league system.

Why it matters: Duncan is the son of longtime major-league pitching coach Dave Duncan, bringing significant player development experience to the dugout. His arrival adds an experienced voice with four years of recent familiarity in the American League East.

What to watch: Boston will finalize the remainder of its major-league coaching staff assignments as offseason preparations continue ahead of spring training.
