What happened: Brayden Schenn declined a trade from the St. Louis Blues to the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was dealt to the New York Islanders at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, per a report. Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts Podcast in January that Toronto and St. Louis had agreed on a deal. The Leafs would have sent prospects Easton Cowan and Ben Danford plus a first-round pick.

Why it matters: The Islanders paid less: Colorado's first-round pick, goaltender prospect Marcus Gidlof, Jonathan Drouin and a 2026 third-round pick from New Jersey. The Blues later bought out Drouin. Schenn then waived his no-trade clause for New York.

By the numbers: Cowan has six goals and 13 points in 14 games to start the season with Toronto. Schenn, 35, has three goals and eight points in 11 games for the Islanders, after six goals and 11 points in 19 games following last season's deadline move.

What to watch: Schenn's former club, the Blues, host Montreal on Tuesday at 8:00 PM ET.
