What happened: Russell Wilson told Drake Maye his handling of outside noise showed resilience and mentality. Maye, the third overall pick in 2024 out of North Carolina, is leading New England early in the 2026 season.

Why it matters: New England opened 1-2 and faced questions about Maye and the coaching staff entering Week 4. Public backing from a veteran Super Bowl-winning quarterback raises the profile of Maye as the franchise starter under scrutiny.

By the numbers: Maye completed 354 of 492 passes for 4,394 yards with 31 touchdowns and 8 interceptions across 17 games in 2025.

What to watch: Maye stays under center as New England works through its October schedule.
