What happened: Lindy Ruff said Rasmus Dahlin is day-to-day. The captain will stay back as Buffalo opens its road trip in Montreal.

Why it matters: Missing the captain removes Buffalo's on-ice leader for the trip opener. How the defense absorbs his minutes shapes the start of the trip.

What to watch: Rejoining the trip after the opener is the next status checkpoint.
