What happened: Philadelphia applied for the exception after backup center Ariel Hukporti tore his right Achilles tendon in the preseason opener, per Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. That apron restriction prevents president Mike Gansey from signing any standard free agent above an undrafted minimum until early December.

Why it matters: If the front office holds its final roster spot open through the trade deadline, the exception allows a rest-of-season offer roughly $700,000 higher than a prorated veteran minimum while staying under the hard cap. The 76ers can also offer a clear rotation role to a buyout big man because Joel Embiid is not expected to play in back-to-back sets.

By the numbers: The exception equals 50 percent of Hukporti's salary, while veteran-minimum contracts prorate downward by roughly $14,000 per day during the regular season to fall under $1 million by the deadline. Philadelphia sits at 3-1 following a 106-93 loss on Oct. 25 and has four back-to-back sets scheduled in March alone.

What to watch: The league must rule on Philadelphia's exception application before the club reaches its early-December signing window.
