What happened: Tarik Skubal pitched seven shutout innings, striking out nine and walking none, as the Tigers won to take the series. The outing extends his run as one of the American League's top starters heading into August.

Why it matters: Skubal's performance lands squarely in a trade deadline conversation that has followed him for weeks, with the same Tarik Skubal drawing trade deadline pursuit across MLB as clubs weigh a deal before the Aug. 3 cutoff. Every dominant start raises his price for a team already regarded as the market's top rotation piece.

What to watch: Skubal's next turn through the rotation will draw added scrutiny as the trade deadline approaches.
