What happened: Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is alert and moving the day after sustaining a gunshot wound to his left leg at a Mississippi concert, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel. Hardy underwent successful surgery and is in stable condition, the school announced. There is optimism he will play football again, though how quickly he can return is unknown.

Why it matters: Hardy is a centerpiece of Missouri's offense, and any extended absence reshapes the Tigers' backfield outlook entering the 2026 season. The off-field nature of the injury — a shooting at a public event — adds layers of medical and emotional recovery beyond a standard football rehab. Optimism from sources is encouraging, but leg gunshot wounds carry variable recovery windows depending on bone, nerve, and vascular involvement.

What to watch: Watch for an official medical update from Missouri on the extent of the wound and a projected recovery timeline. Any guidance from Thamel or program sources on fall camp availability will be the next key marker.
