What happened: Pittsburgh also elevated running back Lew Nichols and wide receiver Brandon Smith from the practice squad. The transaction involving Slaughter secures his spot on the 53-man roster following multiple elevations earlier this season.

Why it matters: Pittman has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and aggravated the injury in practice. The short-term designation sidelines him for a minimum of four games, creating immediate opportunities for Smith in the receiving corps.

What to watch: Pittman will be eligible to return to the active roster as early as Week 10 following Pittsburgh's Week 9 bye.
