What happened: North Carolina said Thursday that Steve Belichick will resign when his medical leave ends Oct. 17 after being away from the program since Aug. 6. The school said an internal investigation found isolated conduct that disregarded Carolina's values and standards and that corrective actions are being handled in-house.

Why it matters: The departure is the second senior exit tied to the program this month after Michael Lombardi's resignation, keeping pressure on the staff around Bill Belichick. North Carolina said the investigation is resolved, but the change leaves a key vacancy on defense as the team tries to carry a 2-0 start forward.

What to watch: Watch for North Carolina to clarify its defensive play-calling structure and any additional staffing changes. The school said Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel will oversee the corrective actions now underway.
