What happened: Tatis bunted to the pitcher and reached second on an errant throw, but umpires ruled he ran inside the first-base line. The call ended the inning before Tatis and manager Craig Stammen were ejected during the ensuing argument.

Why it matters: San Diego had to protect its lead without its starting right fielder or manager while trying to avoid a three-game sweep. Stammen was also ejected three pitches into a July game.

By the numbers: The Padres entered Sunday 72-64 after losing the series' first two games; Tampa Bay was 81-54. It was Tatis' second career ejection and Stammen's fifth.

What to watch: Jase Bowen replaced Tatis in right field. The remaining innings will decide whether San Diego avoids the sweep.
