What happened: American Thoroughbred trainer Cherie DeVaux spoke with Pat McAfee about Golden Tempo's Kentucky Derby victory. DeVaux said the horse's speed figures needed to improve heading into the race and admitted she had confidence but still struggled to believe the result. SportsCenter shared the clip from the McAfee interview.

Why it matters: The Kentucky Derby is the marquee event of American thoroughbred racing, and a winning trainer's perspective is a rare window into how a Derby campaign comes together. DeVaux's comments highlight the gap between belief and execution at the sport's highest stage. Trainer interviews after a Derby win typically shape narratives heading into the rest of the Triple Crown calendar.

What to watch: Watch for follow-up coverage on Golden Tempo's next start and whether DeVaux points the colt toward the Preakness Stakes. Additional McAfee-show segments may surface more detail on the training approach.
