What happened: Max Verstappen qualified fourth for the Mexico City Grand Prix but takes a one-place grid drop, putting him on the third row. The penalty stems from contact with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson in second practice. Lawson said he went to see Verstappen on Saturday morning to apologise.

Why it matters: The incident put two drivers from the Red Bull teams in a collision on Friday and cost the reigning contender track position at a circuit where the run to the first corner decides much of the race. Lawson described his own situation at Racing Bulls as "not ideal" and "not easy," with his future there uncertain. Verstappen cleared the air with Lawson but kept his view on the Racing Bulls seat to himself.

By the numbers: Qualifying order: Lewis Hamilton took Ferrari pole by 0.009s over George Russell, with Charles Leclerc third, Verstappen fourth and Kimi Antonelli fifth before the penalty.

What to watch: Watch Verstappen's launch from the third row on Sunday, and whether Lawson's Racing Bulls status is clarified.
