What happened: NFL insider Ian Rapoport tied two Washington headlines together on Monday, noting the Wizards captured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery while the Commanders are slated to host the 2027 NFL Draft. The Wizards beat the lottery odds to jump to the top spot, with the Jazz, Grizzlies and Bulls rounding out the top four. The Commanders' draft-host role was previously awarded by the league for the 2027 cycle.

Why it matters: The pairing matters for a Washington sports market that has spent years on the periphery of the spotlight. A franchise-altering No. 1 pick gives the Wizards a chance to restart their rebuild around a centerpiece talent, while hosting the NFL Draft delivers a national showcase for the Commanders and the region. Combined, the two events anchor a 12-month window where Washington becomes a recurring story in both league cycles.

What to watch: Watch for the Wizards' pre-draft workout schedule and consensus No. 1 prospect chatter heading into June, plus the NFL's 2026 schedule release Thursday, May 14, which will frame the Commanders' on-field runway into their draft-host year.
