What happened: Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras has accepted an invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby. The commitment comes shortly after he publicly expressed his desire to join the field.

Why it matters: His participation gives Boston a representative during the All-Star festivities, securing a spotlight despite being left off the American League All-Star roster. The showcase arrives during a turbulent stretch for the veteran, who recently served a seven-game suspension following a bench-clearing brawl.

What to watch: Contreras will prepare for the midsummer exhibition while Boston continues its current series in Chicago.
