What happened: The Washington Wizards secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft lottery on Sunday, marking their first top selection since 2010. The victory comes as the district enters a high-profile era for professional sports, bolstered by the NFL's recent commitment to the capital.

Why it matters: Landing a cornerstone talent like AJ Dybantsa provides the Wizards a definitive path for their rebuild. This milestone aligns with the Commanders' 2027 NFL Draft hosting role, signaling a massive regional athletic revitalization under fresh leadership.

What to watch: The Wizards will evaluate draft-day options, including a potential trade down from No. 1, leading up to the June 23 selection night.
