What happened: Isaac Alarcon is set to occupy San Francisco's international player pathway exemption after his release. The 49ers are assembling their practice squad ahead of Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Why it matters: The designation preserves an additional practice-squad place as San Francisco prepares for its trip to Melbourne, Australia. Khalil Herbert, Khadarel Hodge and Ogbo Okoronkwo were also linked to the travel roster.

By the numbers: An NFL practice squad can include 17 players when one occupies the international pathway exemption. Teams can designate four practice-squad players as protected.

What to watch: San Francisco's initial practice-squad signings and its active roster will clarify which players travel Wednesday.
