What happened: The Athletics are selecting the contract of first baseman/outfielder Joey Meneses, promoting him to the active roster from Triple-A Las Vegas. The move adds a veteran bat with recent power production to the major league mix.

Why it matters: Meneses joins an Athletics club sitting at 38-39 and in the middle of a home series against Los Angeles. His promotion gives the lineup another corner-bat and designated-hitter option as the team tries to steady a season hovering around .500.

What to watch: Watch whether Meneses debuts at first base or designated hitter and how quickly he works into the heart of the order.
