What happened: Per Elliotte Friedman Saturday, Simon Edvinsson prefers a trade from Detroit rather than signing an extension. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff faces the call with Detroit lacking a full-time decision-maker. The 23-year-old profiles as a proven top-four defender who defends and moves the puck.

Why it matters: Detroit risks losing a core-age defender entering development years without game reps. Chicago lacks a true No. 1 despite stockpiling young defenders and adding Bowen Byram. An out-of-conference deal removes rivalry tax while public pressure weakens Detroit leverage.

What to watch: Watch Horcoff's asking price around picks plus a young defender or forward. Watch whether Chicago acts before missed camp time stalls development further.
