What happened: Free-agent wide receiver Brandin Cooks is signing with San Francisco's practice squad. The move is initially to get him up to speed for games. Cooks enters his 13th NFL season as a former first-round pick out of Oregon State.

Why it matters: San Francisco adds veteran depth at receiver after losing Demarcus Robinson to a high ankle sprain. Cooks sits 189 yards short of 10,000 career receiving yards, putting a milestone within reach if elevated.

By the numbers: Cooks has 9,811 career receiving yards, needing 189 to reach 10,000. He is entering Year 13.

What to watch: Watch for Cooks to be elevated to the active roster once conditioned. San Francisco's upcoming receiver availability will determine timing.
