What happened: The Buffalo Sabres are reportedly making a significant push to acquire Mathew Barzal from the New York Islanders this summer. Following their 2026 Atlantic Division title, the Sabres are seeking an offensive game-changer to bolster their top-six forward group as the Islanders explore market interest for their star center.

Why it matters: Acquiring Barzal would provide Buffalo with an elite playmaker to drive their power play and create a dominant 1-2 punch alongside Tage Thompson. For the Islanders, a trade would offer critical salary-cap flexibility as they navigate a rising $104 million league ceiling and look to retool after missing the 2026 postseason.

What to watch: Watch for trade talks to intensify ahead of the NHL Draft on June 26, as Buffalo looks to finalize a package that could include high-end prospects or their 27th overall pick.
