What happened: The Montreal Canadiens have discussed restricted free agent Kirby Dach in trade talks. Montreal remains open to moving the center as it explores upgrades for its top six.

Why it matters: Dach's uncertain future affects Montreal's roster and contract planning for 2026-27. A deal could make him part of a broader attempt to strengthen the Canadiens down the middle.

By the numbers: Dach recorded 15 points in 37 regular-season games in 2025-26. His four-year, $13.45 million contract expired in June, and Montreal retained his negotiating rights with a qualifying offer.

What to watch: Contract discussions and Montreal's search for another center will shape whether Dach stays or moves this summer.
