What happened: Columbus Crew made another in-match change in a semifinal where the winner reaches the final. The move came after a pair of halftime changes and another switch early in the second half.

Why it matters: In a knockout match, each substitution carries extra weight because there is no second leg to smooth over a bad spell. Columbus had already shown a willingness to keep rotating personnel as the match unfolded.

What to watch: The next turn is whether the reshuffled group can get Columbus over the line and into the final. A win would leave the club with one match left in the competition.
