What happened: Third-round pick Daylen Everette, who showed open-field tackling gains in the preseason, paces all qualifying first-year defenders with a 47.1% completion rate allowed across at least 15 targets in PFF tracking. Fifth-round selection Hezekiah Masses sits second at 52.2%, followed by Malik Muhammad at 58.3%, Mansoor Delane at 60.0%, and Will Lee III at 62.5%.

Why it matters: Mid- and late-round rookies are outproducing higher-pedigree peers in early 2026 coverage metrics. Everette, drafted 85th overall out of Georgia by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Masses, taken 175th overall out of California by the Las Vegas Raiders after earning NFL Rookie of the Week honors in September, both hold a comfortable efficiency edge over sixth overall pick Mansoor Delane of the Kansas City Chiefs.

By the numbers: 2026 NFL rookie completion percentage allowed (minimum 15 targets, per PFF): Daylen Everette 47.1% (2026 Round 3, No. 85 overall), Hezekiah Masses 52.2% (2026 Round 5, No. 175 overall), Malik Muhammad 58.3%, Mansoor Delane 60.0% (2026 Round 1, No. 6 overall), Will Lee III 62.5%.

What to watch: All five first-year defenders face increased target volume as offenses adjust coverage matchups entering Week 7 of the 2026 regular season.
