What happened: FIA International Sporting Code Appendix L mandates drivers must be at least 18 years old to secure a full Super Licence. However, a regulatory exemption introduced in 2024 allows the governing body to license drivers at 17 years old who demonstrate exceptional single-seater ability.

Why it matters: Following Kimi Antonelli securing the 2026 world championship for Mercedes at 20 years and 68 days old, the loophole leaves room for an even younger champion. Lowering the record would require winning the title across a driver's first two seasons, a feat accomplished only five times in Formula 1 history.

By the numbers: Drivers to win the F1 title in their first or second season: Giuseppe Farina (1st season, 1950), Juan Manuel Fangio (2nd, 1951), Jacques Villeneuve (2nd, 1997), Lewis Hamilton (2nd, 2008), Kimi Antonelli (2nd, 2026).

What to watch: Mercedes enters the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos leading Ferrari by 126 points with an opportunity to secure its ninth Constructors' Championship.
