What happened: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez publicly defended Kylian Mbappe, saying the forward's mission is to score goals and he does so in volume. Perez added that 'perhaps there are others who score fewer goals,' a pointed remark deflecting criticism of Mbappe's season. The comments arrived via Fabrizio Romano amid a turbulent stretch for the club.

Why it matters: The defense lands as Real Madrid faces fan backlash and reported managerial upheaval, with the same reporting cycle flagging direct contacts over a Jose Mourinho return. Perez's public backing signals the club is protecting its marquee signing even as the season closes without silverware. It also frames the internal debate over whether goals alone justify Mbappe's role in a side that fell short of trophies.

What to watch: Watch for follow-up from Mbappe's camp and any formal announcement on the Mourinho operation referenced in parallel reporting. Madrid's end-of-season review and squad decisions will test how far Perez's public backing extends.
