Giants rule out Theo Johnson, Jevon Holland for Week 7 at Texans

J.J. McCarthy makes his first New York start shorthanded.

What happened: Tight end Theo Johnson (neck), initially listed as doubtful on Friday, and safety Jevon Holland (concussion) were both downgraded to out on Saturday. Cornerback Greg Newsome II (concussion) and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (season-ending shoulder injury) are also out for Sunday's game at the Houston Texans, while cornerback Paulson Adebo (knee), right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), offensive lineman Marcus Mbow (knee), and safety Tyler Nubin (neck) are listed as questionable.

Why it matters: Johnson suffered his neck injury in Week 5 and missed last week's loss to the New Orleans Saints, leaving quarterback J.J. McCarthy without a starting tight end in his first start for New York. With quarterback Jaxson Dart and pass rusher Brian Burns already on injured reserve, losing Holland after his strong start to the season alongside Newsome and every-snap defender Edmunds further depletes both units.

By the numbers: New York enters Week 7 at 3-2-1 (No. 4 seed) after falling to the 2-4 New Orleans Saints, while the Houston Texans sit at 2-4 (No. 13 seed) on a two-game winning streak. Eight Giants carry Week 7 injury designations—four ruled out and four questionable—in addition to Dart (placed on IR on Sept. 24) and Burns (placed on IR on Sept. 29). Adebo has missed five consecutive games since sustaining his knee injury in Week 2.

What to watch: Adebo could be activated from injured reserve on Saturday after returning to practice Wednesday. Final game-day availability for Adebo, Eluemunor, Mbow, and Nubin will be determined ahead of Sunday's kickoff in Houston.
