What happened: Cleveland Guardians rookie left-hander Parker Messick takes the mound at home against the Texas Rangers tonight at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Messick enters the start ranking first among MLB rookies with a 2.67 ERA, tied for second with seven wins, second with 101 strikeouts, and third with a 1.05 WHIP.

Why it matters: Messick has emerged as one of the most productive first-year arms in the league, giving Cleveland a reliable rotation piece as it sits at 44-40 and stays in the thick of the standings race. A strong outing against a Texas club hovering at .500 would reinforce his case as a centerpiece of the Guardians' young core.

What to watch: Watch whether Messick can extend his strikeout pace against a Texas lineup riding a four-game winning streak, and how deep he works into the game.
