What happened: The Cleveland Guardians secured an extra draft pick through Major League Baseball's Prospect Promotion Incentive after rookie left-hander Parker Messick earned award finalist honors. The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Messick a top-three finalist for both the American League Rookie of the Year and the AL Cy Young Award.

Why it matters: Under the collective bargaining agreement, clubs that promote top prospects for Opening Day receive an amateur draft selection following the first round if that player places top three in Cy Young voting or wins Rookie of the Year. Messick's confirmed top-three Cy Young finish guarantees Cleveland the additional draft asset ahead of the 2027 season.

What to watch: The BBWAA will announce the final voting results and award winners during its mid-November awards schedule.
