What happened: Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates backed Michael Penix Jr. in an interview with Jordan Schultz, saying the club is a 'completely different football team' when No. 9 is on the field. Bates, whom coach Kevin Stefanski recently praised as a person and player, added that teammates 'can sleep good at night' with Penix running the offense.

Why it matters: The Falcons selected Penix eighth overall out of Washington in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft (as of Sept. 29, 2026) to anchor the offense long term. Strong backing from a veteran defensive leader underscores Penix's command of the locker room after he appeared in nine games in 2025, completing 166 of 276 passes for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions, per ESPN (as of Sept. 29, 2026).

What to watch: Atlanta looks to extend its winning streak and reach .500 in its next regular-season matchup.
