Jets add premier pass rusher to rebuild defense. Video

What happened: The New York Jets chose Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey second overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bailey, a 6-4, 255-pound standout, led college football with 16.5 sacks last season. The pick addresses New York's dire need for edge pressure after a 4-13 campaign.

Why it matters: Bailey's explosiveness could transform the Jets' pass rush, which ranked last in sacks during 2025. Paired with recent free-agent signings, he boosts playoff. Historically, top-5 EDGE picks average 8+ sacks in Year 1, accelerating contention in AFC East.

By the numbers: Bailey 2025 stats: 16.5 sacks, 25 TFL, 4 FF. Jets 2025 defense: 28 sacks (32nd). Draft shift: Jets #2 pick .5 prospects - Bailey pre-announcement. Head-to-head vs. top O-lines: 12 sacks allowed.

What to watch: Watch Jets' third-round plans for secondary help and Bailey's pro day measurables at rookie minicamp.
